Thinking About the Long Run
Numerous research studies have come forward in recent years indicating a possible link between artificial sweeteners and health complications such as heart issues, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. These artificial sweeteners have been a cornerstone of the keto diet from the very beginning, and if you’re like me, you’ve got to have your sugar fix.
Enter stevia, the trending plant based sweetener with zero calories (and zero impact on your blood sugar). Stevia powder is all natural, and the perfect substitute for Splenda, Sweet n Low, and other artificial sweeteners for those on the keto diet. Stevia comes in many different forms, and I put them to the test to see just how useful this product is for my keto journey.
Putting it to the Test
If you haven’t heard, the name Stevia comes from the stevia plant, which is naturally sweet like sugar cane. Like traditional sugar, it’s produced as powder, liquid stevia drops, and other forms of stevia extract. I started with the powder (or sugar crystals), since that’s what I’m most accustomed to. I was pleasantly surprised at the taste. Other low cal sweeteners sometimes have a bitter aftertaste, which I’ve learned to deal with in my morning coffee. The stevia powder didn’t have that at all, and was just as sweet.
It can even be used in baking, or, for the more adventurous, you can try the liquid stevia drops. I wasn’t entirely on board with this one, and was afraid that I would use too much and give myself a sugar overdose. I wasn’t exactly wrong, as a little goes a long way, but overall I was impressed with the convenience of having a dropper and not needing to rip open a thousand packets.
You can’t go wrong with Stevia. It’s high quality and the perfect natural alternative to low calorie sugar. While no one is really 100% sure on the health effects of artificial sweeteners, there’s enough evidence in the medical community to make any one appreciate a natural, clean-eating diet. If you’re sick of the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners or are looking to add some natural variety into your keto diet, you’ll enjoy Stevia just as must as I did.
